original artAbbas Visaegok is the party's primary divine caster and a devoted cleric of Pharasma, present from S4 through S64. He serves as the group's healer, anti-undead specialist, and lorekeeper, drawing on a full divine spell list that includes Heal, Divine Lance, Vitality Lash, Forbidding Ward, Bless, Guidance, Sanctuary, Holy Light, Silence, and Locate, alongside expert Medicine (Battle Medicine, Treat Wounds, Vital Beacon) [S6, S7, S44]. He is the party's strongest Religion and Occultism checker, identifying undead, constructs, demons, and cursed items throughout the campaign. His doctrinal commitment to Pharasma — 'the dead must stay dead' — shapes every decision: he destroys necromantic items on sight, performs exorcisms to send spirits to the River of Souls, and is viscerally opposed to soul-trapping and the Empty Death [S9, S14, S31]. Abbas spent his adult life in Absalom as a 'doctor cleric' after his family fled war in Sirium, giving him practical knowledge of the city and its archives [S34]. Over the campaign's middle arc he acquires and safeguards dangerous relics — the Whispering Reeds, Zarmadvian's spellbook — consulting scholars about their curses and keeping them concealed under his dueling cape [S36]. He reads the Whispering Reeds and the Thresholds of Truth using his Strange Script feat and a Religion roll of 31 [S51]. By the later sessions he operates at higher power: casting rank-4 light to counter magical darkness, critting cultists for 40+ fire with Divine Lance, casting the wand of peaceful rest on Otari's corpse, and leading the one-hour reactivation of the vault teleportation portal [S44, S54, S57]. In S63, Abbas tanked a hydra shield-first, blessed the group, located submerged magic with Detect Magic, dispelled the star glagon's water effect, took the Lesser Armory Bracelet, and used Augury to choose retreat before the grave-knight question became immediate [S62, S63]. His name is the most ASR-garbled in the campaign; alias resolution should be treated as provisional. In S64 he helps choose the safer escape route, checks Doriana, buys support magic, researches Uravian and the grave knight, and triggers the warded door's opening by inspecting it with prayer and detect magic.
2 open hooks remain on this record.
Abbas Visaegok arrived at the Otari graveyard alone, before the rest of the party, announcing himself with the divine light the others spotted in the dark [S4]. From the first group sessions he established the role he would hold across the entire campaign: healer, anti-undead striker, and Pharasma's enforcer. He casts Bless, Forbidding Ward, Divine Lance, and Guidance while sustaining light for the group, and uses Detect Magic and Recall Knowledge to identify every hazard and undead creature the party encounters [S6, S7].
His faith is not merely mechanical. Abbas abhors soul-trapping as a perversion of the natural cycle, pockets gold during one search (drawing Venris's ire), and plays cautiously enough that 'Abbas thinks that about everything' becomes a running party joke [S9]. In S14 he destroys both a flesh abomination and a 230 gp necromantic staff rather than let them pass out of the dungeon — a pattern that will repeat whenever necromantic items surface [S14]. By S15 his conduct earns him the title 'the priest with decorum' from Boss Scrug [S15].
S20 adds a personal note: Abbas recently came from Absalom, and his recall knowledge places the vault dioramas there. He throws a fire bead that firebombs both a golem and the library — one of his rare moments of collateral enthusiasm [S20].
Abbas personally blasts apart a Nimbaloth shrine after identifying it via recall knowledge, confirming his hostility to the void-goddess whose influence permeates the vault [S21]. He performs exorcisms throughout this stretch — commanding furnace ghosts to the River of Souls [S17] — and identifies the poltergeist and the forgotten servant so the party can lay them to rest properly [S22].
S24 marks a spiritual inflection point: Abbas 'lost everything in terms of beliefs,' becomes suspicious of the Pathfinder Society, and learns the Awakened Portal ritual, positioning him as the party's chief handler of arcane/divine ritual work [S24]. He defends Carman at the trial and is noted to be poorly rested, with deepening eye-bags [S25].
The acquisition of the Whispering Reeds and Zarmadvian's spellbook in sessions 35–36 raises the stakes. Abbas carries both, keeps them hidden under his dueling cape, consults a scholar about the Empty Death and the Reeds' curse, and links the nightmare afflictions to Zarmadvian's writing [S36]. He reads Cora's fragile codex using the Strange Script feat [S44] and, much later, finishes the Whispering Reeds and the Thresholds of Truth with a Religion check of 31, watching over the afflicted Venris through the night to grant a save bonus [S51].
S34 fills in his backstory explicitly: Abbas grew up in Sirium before his family fled war, spent his adult life in Absalom as a 'doctor cleric,' and endured a 'price of knowledge' ordeal (including a double-1) at the church's Anatian archives while chasing the spellbook [S34].
The later dungeon levels push Abbas into higher-tier play. He carries the bottle that counters the Stinky Mushroom Room, supports Nimbaloth and Empty Death lore for the group, and is explicitly named 'Abbas' by the GM mid-session, anchoring the alias cluster [S40]. S42 reveals he is approximately eighty years old but expected to live to ~150 — long-lived even by cleric standards [S42].
S44 is a showcase: Abbas sustains a rank-4 light spell to counter a shadow's magical darkness, crits cultists for 40+ fire damage with Divine Lance, debates the holy/unholy Divine Sanctification of enemies, and casts Sanctuary and See Invisibility [S44]. He casts Augury before the arena (result: 'nothing'/foreboding darkness) and tells Venris a secret 'just in case' before the fight — a small character beat that signals how seriously he treats the deepening danger [S46].
S48 earns him a joking title from the GM: 'the main character.' He is the only party member who understands Aklo, and he translates the chained Sagathi rather than dismiss it — though his stated priority is 'solving the big thing,' not the named individual [S48]. S49 sees him master the glyphed wall-control altar, crit-read the word LENG on Dorianna's wrist, and recall the Denizen of Leng — lore work that sets the next investigation arc in motion [S49].
Sessions 51–54 form a tight cluster around the ruby attunement and the mummy threat. Abbas finishes reading the Thresholds of Truth [S51], casts Locate (heightened) to hunt the ruby, and uses Calm to briefly neutralize the alchemist boss [S52]. In the climactic mummy confrontation he is the linchpin: he casts Silence on Cid to muzzle the mummy spellcaster, then follows with Holy Light (15 fire + 19 spirit) to set the unholy mummy burning and end its invisibility [S53]. He completes the operation by casting the wand of peaceful rest on Otari's corpse and leading the party toward Yazongleer via the Locate pointer [S54].
S55 introduces a 'crisis of faith': casting an offensive spell at a will-o'-wisp triggers devotion self-harm, a mechanical consequence of playing a Pharasma devotee in a dungeon that generates constant moral edge-cases [S55]. S56 has him facing a grave knight described as 'a prime example of everything you stand against, created through the most foul un-Pharasma means' — the campaign crystallizing his entire character concept into a single encounter [S56].
S57 makes him the primary caster for the hour-long portal reactivation; S58 has him spending an in-character hour reviewing journals and driving the Gauntlight lattice/lens investigation, earning the 'main character' label a second time [S57, S58].
By sessions 59–62 Abbas operates across cleric and champion modes simultaneously. He identifies the Create Undead ritual table, commands Corloc to drop his glaive (resisted), and runs party-wide battle medicine [S59]. He refuses on principle to use the evil Hellforge gear, identifies a zebub, the hellforge anvil's holy-water weakness, an Oscelus, and a pentagram-lock — and casts Divine Wrath, Fear, and Heroism in the same session [S61].
As of S62, Abbas is shield-tanking a hydra, casting Bless and Sanctuary for the group, and landing a crit on a living-landslide golem with Divine Lance — still the party's divine pillar at the campaign's deepest point reached so far [S62].
Abbas drives the session's problem-solving from start to finish. Detect Magic and light let him narrow the search to a submerged magical source after the hydra remains show nothing [S63, 00:07:41; S63, 00:17:24]. In combat he keeps contributing with Divine Lance, then successfully Dispel Magics the star glagon's water effect even though the water does not immediately drop [S63, 02:35:17]. After the fight he receives the Lesser Armory Bracelet [S63, 03:14:53], recalls Sizek's claim that the pentagram lock might be tricked with four pieces [S63, 03:12:56], and casts Augury about encountering Khalido/Kalido Harvex before recommending a return to town [S63, 03:19:39; S63, 03:21:28].
S64 keeps Abbas in the role of cautious divine analyst. He helps choose the long detour out of the Gauntlight, checks on Doriana's recovery, and spends the Otari day buying support magic and researching Uravian/Erevian and the grave knight [S64, 00:15:46; S64, 00:50:30; S64, 03:50:30; S64, 03:54:11]. The session ends with Abbas inspecting the warded door through prayer and detect magic; its runes light up and the door begins to open, making him the trigger point for the next confrontation [S64, 04:14:08; S64, 04:14:33].
Player-facing highlight card. Cited to session beats. Have a great year, Detective of the Empty Light.
Your greatest hits playlist: Divine Lance and Vitality Lash on the dead, Heal / Soothe to keep the line standing, and Light to fight the dark. Plus the deep-cut utility tracks — Forbidding Ward, Bless, Guidance, Detect Magic, Battle Medicine, and a religion/occultism recall-knowledge that names the monster before it hits you.
Your whole campaign in one creed, over the shattered Nimbaloth altar: "The dead, evil or good, the dead must stay dead." [S21 ~01:05:00]
You and Cidolfus split the front line and the psychopomp duties; with Veve Hao you're the party's paired casters — which got personal when your exorcism of her possessing spirit backfired [S31 03:41:13]; and you've run a long, petty cold war with Venris, who keeps hiding the loot from you.
From edgy graveyard exorcist to the party's lore-keeper and investigator — by S58 you'd pieced together the Gauntlight's lens/lattice/fulcrum machinery and the beam's workings, and your secret check quietly proved the Rose Guard souls were not in their relics [S58 04:06:07].
…blast the cursed thing before anyone finishes appraising it. (RIP that ~230 gp necromantic staff, S14. On principle.)
