The party finished mopping up a pack of Sanctuary-casting Nimbaloth cultists and a magic-immune invisible will-o'-wisp, then pushed on to a torch-lit arena ruled by a flying showman called the Cheery Man. He offers death-matches for treasure on a sliding "good / fair / dead odds" scale. Venris took a "fair" fight alone and got teleported into a 1v1 against the Executioner (a slow great-axe brute that marks targets for death) while the rest of the party fought two petrifying Basilisks up on the balcony. Both fights were near-death grinders. Venris won his solo by hit-and-run and a last-gasp hero point, earning 50 gold and Healer's Gloves. He convinced the (mostly) reluctant party to do one more fight — after Abbas caught him trying to settle the vote with a loaded coin. Abbas cast Augury to scout the next battle, and the party committed to a "deadly"-odds fight as the cliffhanger.
The transcript opens cold, already at the top of initiative — there's no spoken recap. The party was mid-fight against a gaggle of grey-green hooded cultists who had all cast Sanctuary on themselves, with an invisible flying creature harassing them. Earlier they had also noted a stone formation wall where Carman had been hiding.
| 00:00:10 | Pregame tech chatter (Windows / streaming) The session opens cold with stream/Foundry tech troubles and an off-topic argument about Windows 10 vs 11 and Linux while the GM (Speaker A) waits for everyone to load in. No recap is given; the GM simply resumes at the top of initiative. [S45 · 00:00:13 · turn 0002 · scene 001] |
| 00:04:59 | Combat resumes: Nimbaloth cultists and the invisible will-o'-wisp The party resumes a fight in progress against a 'gaggle' of grey-green hooded cultists (flail-wielding priests of Nimbaloth) who have all cast Sanctuary on themselves, plus an invisible flying creature (a will-o'-wisp type) that is immune to magic, casts Searing Light/Shocking Grasp, regenerates, and goes invisible. The party works around Sanctuary (each attack forces a will save) while Abbas/Abbas heals via Vital Beacon (touch) and Hymn of Healing, Veve/VV shoots with a longbow, Cid raises his shield, and Venris strikes the wisp with sneak-attack precision. They cut down the cultists one by one; the last cultist flees, leaps over a railing, and survives a 40-foot fall into the poltergeist room/arena passage. [S45 · 00:05:10 · turn 0036 · scene 002] |
| 00:50:42 | Regroup: the stone wall, Carman's hideout, and the call to the arena Out of initiative, the party patches up (Hymn of Healing fast-healing math; battle medicine). They discuss the stone formation wall where Carman was hiding and the ~20-hour job to break through it for the tower, joking about explosives and the lumber yard. The party then heads toward the arena to confront the level-10+ leaping figure they glimpsed. Venris is keen to fight; Cid suggests letting Venris go in alone while the others watch from the seats in case it's a trap. [S45 · 00:53:47 · turn 0499 · scene 003] |
| 01:02:59 | The Cheery Man and the rules of the arena The party enters a cavernous arena (a wide walk 30-40 feet above the floor, six torch-lit balconies, a giant gong, twin staircases). The leaping figure flies up to meet them and introduces himself as 'the Cheery Man,' an arena master who offers battles for treasure. He lets challengers pick 'good odds,' 'fair odds,' or 'dead odds,' fights one set at a time, and warns that once a battle starts it is to the death, with non-participants barred from interfering ('I will cut you'). Venris accepts a 'fair' fight and is teleported to the center of the arena under a Victor sigil. The Cheery Man fills the stands with an illusory roaring crowd. While exploring, the party also spots oddly-posed petrified statues and something reptilian moving beneath them. [S45 · 01:17:16 · turn 0671 · scene 004] |
| 01:44:26 | Two combats at once: Venris solos the Executioner, the rest fight Basilisks Two combats run simultaneously. In the arena, Venris is matched 1v1 against the Executioner, a robed figure with a cleaving great-axe who marks a target for death (+1d12 precision), lands intimidating strikes (frightened), and is 'fat and slow.' Up on the balcony, the rest of the party fights two Basilisks lurking among the statues, whose petrifying gaze forces repeated fortitude saves (avert gaze gives only +2). Veve's Courageous Anthem/Rallying Anthem and a Spray of Stars (dazzle) help; Cid tanks with his shield and Marshal aura, crit-tripping with Snagging Strike; Abbas hits with Divine Lance. The party realizes the lurkers are Basilisks and that Basilisk blood can restore petrified victims. [S45 · 02:03:04 · turn 1080 · scene 005] |
| 02:34:24 | Basilisks down; the petrified statues and Basilisk-blood clue The balcony fight winds down: Cid crit-kills one Basilisk (splitting its skull) and the other is whittled away. Abbas examines the badly-damaged statues — recognizing one as a Darklands U Death-hand (pale vampire-like humanoid) and another as a larger flesh-warped abomination — and recalls that Basilisk blood can restore petrified beings. The two mostly-intact statues are posed mid-run/mid-walk and hold petrified weapons (a unique-looking chakram and a composite short bow). Abbas chooses not to share the weapon detail with the group yet. [S45 · 03:06:43 · turn 1699 · scene 006] |
| 03:11:51 | Hit-and-run to the kill: Venris outlasts the Executioner Alone in the arena, Venris adopts a hit-and-run strategy: step away with his rogue mobility, land the occasional crit (stacking persistent bleed), and avoid the Executioner's slow great-axe swings while the illusory crowd jeers. Dropped to 4 HP, he survives a thrown-great-axe gamble by spending his reaction, range-trips the Executioner with a bola, then gritting his teeth spends a hero point to dash in and finish the foe with a stab between the eyes. [S45 · 03:39:25 · turn 1986 · scene 007] |
| 03:40:22 | Victory prize and the solo-vs-party debate The Cheery Man teleports back, congratulates Venris, and pays out: 50 gold to the victor plus a choice between the War Caller's Chimes of Destruction (cast Shatter once/day, 100 gp) and Healer's Gloves (+1 Medicine, once/day heal 2d6+7). Venris takes the gloves and immediately uses them to claw back from 4 HP. He then lobbies the party to fight together for more rewards, conceding that the solo fight taught him how much he relies on the group (no flanking, all feints failed). Cid and Veve come around; Abbas/Visigok stays skeptical, seeing arena loot as a waste versus the Gauntlight problem. The party heals up (Vital Beacon, Soothe, Treat Wounds, refocus). | 03:57:40 | The loaded coin, the augury, and the deadly-fight cliffhanger With the vote at a gridlock, Venris proposes settling it on a coin flip — but Abbas inspects the coin and discovers it is loaded (it lands heads twice), busting Venris's 'level-zero' cheat. They redo the flip honestly with Abbas's own coin and the party agrees to one more fight. Abbas casts a 10-minute Augury to ask what they'll be fighting (GM defers the result to next session). The party commits to a 'deadly'-odds fight as the next-session cliffhanger. The session closes with an out-of-character conversation in which Speaker C raises that the GM laughing at the party's missed rolls during a serious near-death fight hurt his enjoyment; he apologizes for over-reacting and the GM acknowledges his thoughts.
