Session 58: The Lattice, the Lantern, and the Ghost's Confession

S58 Recap: The Lattice, the Lantern, and the Ghost's Confession

TL;DR

A quiet, lore-heavy session with no real combat. Abbas spent an in-game hour reviewing every note and journal the party has collected, surfacing the recurring riddle of the Gauntlight's "fulcrum, lattice, and four lenses" — the framework Belcorra wants to weaponize into a world-burning sword. The party worked out how the teleport portals function, dodged the stalking Grave Knight through a tense library descent, searched Vollok's lounge and Lazda's old draining chamber for clues, and identified a recovered "Lantern of Empty Light" (a frightening level-six item tied to Nimbaloth's empty death). The session's gut-punch came at Otari's ghost: the party told him roughly five hundred years have passed, and he realized — by touching their Rose Guard relics — that fragments of his dead comrades' souls are bound to those relics and never crossed the river of souls. To read the book's magically locked final pages, the party must either find their maker (a dwarf comrade who was a hidden necromancer) or sever the binding.

Previously on

The party studied the Grave Knight, confirming it is armor-bound with an anti-divine aura and only vulnerable to holy power if its armor/defenses can first be broken. They bought potions of emergency escape in Otari, returned to the Gauntlight, found fading hauntings, and critically activated a lower teleport portal (good for a full year), uncovering a route toward the Darklands. They cleared a rotten spa/sauna corridor and a secret stair, ending on a boastful sauna-dwelling pugilist with magical hand wraps guarding a small silver chest. Venris, now able to cast, spammed Electric Arc through a door to kill a pack of wolves without entering initiative.

00:00:00GM recap: graveyard knight, escape potions, and the lower portal
A player reads a 'Super TLDR' of the prior session: the party studied the Grave Knight (confirming its armor-bound, anti-divine aura and that it is only vulnerable to holy power if its armor/defenses can be broken), bought potions of emergency escape in Otari, and returned to the Gauntlight. In the dungeon they found fading hauntings, critically activated a lower teleport portal (good for a full year), uncovered a route toward the Darklands, killed trapped gas/creatures in a rotten spa corridor, found a secret stair linking the sauna wing to upper rooms, and ended on a crude, boastful sauna-dwelling pugilist (with magical hand wraps) guarding a small silver chest. Venris, now a magic-user, killed wolves through a door with spammed Electric Arc without even entering initiative. [S58 · 00:00:00 · turn 0001 · scene 001]
00:05:15Tech setup and the Cheery Man's jumpscare
After Foundry/stream setup chatter (the GM now streams the DM's full-map perspective instead of the limited player view), the party is back at the door to the upper levels. The recurring laughing prankster NPC, the 'Cheery Man,' appears right next to Venice/Venris to try to scare the party with a playful entrance; his cackle is now a familiar, non-threatening sound. He announces he had to 'replenish his stocks' and asks if they are ready for another go, then disappears when the party refuses to play along. Venris reports back that it was just the broom shortcut upstairs, nothing of use. [S58 · 00:09:01 · turn 0082 · scene 002]
00:13:42Abbas reviews the party's accumulated notes and journals
While the others scout, the GM has Abbas (Abus) sit down for an in-character hour reviewing everything the party has accumulated across the vaults: Belcorra's journal, Vandy's journal, Drah_/Draft Key's notes, Vollok's notes, Balfor's journal, Tarn's journal, stacks of maps, and torn library pages. The review surfaces a recurring motif of 'the fulcrum, the lattice, and the lenses.' Belcorra's notes describe the lattice not being built to produce the output she wanted, and her resolve to tear it down and build one that obeys. Vollok's blueprints all show slots for four lenses, with a single cryptic line: 'I was able to recover them. I'll keep them safe.' A player reads a Belcorra excerpt: the Gauntlight 'was made to be a sword, and it will burn.' [S58 · 00:25:35 · turn 0224 · scene 003]
00:30:35Where are the lenses? Theorizing the Gauntlight's path
The party debates where Vollok would have hidden the recovered lenses. Lining up the maps, they reason the Gauntlight beam runs straight down the tower from the cupola through every floor (it lined up with the library and Lazda's draining chamber). They recall Lazda was shackled and consumed for power in a secret room connected to Vollok's study. The party concludes that if they want the lenses they likely must descend as far down the beam's path as possible. They worry about the 'worm on the second floor' (a teleported creature, likely a sacrifice/power source) and decide a trip up to Otari is still pending. [S58 · 00:41:54 · turn 0366 · scene 004]
00:43:50Avoiding the Grave Knight: how the teleport portals work
The party plans how to move through the vault without being caught by the Grave Knight stalking them, and works out the teleport-portal rules with the GM. Each activated portal is like a hallway: stepping in, a character gets a memory/HUD-like sense of where each connected tunnel leads (not a live feed). Someone with no prior knowledge would see the available exits but not know which floor each goes to. The knight is not confirmed able to use portals (only seen chasing on foot), but could ambush at single-path portal rooms. Veve insists she can sense the others inside the portal-space and simply follow them, though no one else shares that confidence. They agree to use teleport rooms when possible and decide to head to Otari, routing via the library to floor four. Venris reminds everyone to keep their potions of emergency escape ready (his in his non-metal arm). [S58 · 00:51:00 · turn 0452 · scene 005]
01:11:02Tense descent through the library; the knight's presence
The party tries the sixth-floor portal but the third-floor link is locked/expired, so they reroute through the second-floor portal and descend toward the library. Moving in marching order with scout/avoid-notice/investigate exploration actions, they pass the empty ghoul-Morlock room and grow tense. The lingering touch of the Grave Knight manifests as a dread aura: Cid (whose hair the knight pulled) keeps shedding clumps of hair and feels a cold sweat and the knight's presence; Veve repeatedly swears she hears or senses the knight behind them. They find a bloody greave-print and a knocked-over chair at the bottom of the stairs, but every check turns up empty. The party debates whether to silently coordinate via Veve's Message cantrip during invisibility/stealth. [S58 · 01:12:47 · turn 0614 · scene 006]
01:39:50Searching Vollok's lounge and Lazda's chamber; note fragments
After a break, the party searches Vollok's makeshift lounge and the connected circular chamber where Lazda was drained (its light now gone since Lazda's rescue). Veve (afraid of bugs) pretends to search and finds nothing; Abbas investigates and Venris, caring less about the maggots, sifts the maggot/pus-stained pages. They recover fragmentary notes referencing the beam being at 'full strength,' 'no intermediaries,' 'trials, more victims,' and a chilling page: 'the Gauntlight remembers its purpose and soon, so shall the world' burn. The notes mention a 'filthy dwarf' subject (Lazda) proving unusually durable, implying these are among Vollok's last writings before the Gauntlight fired on the town. [S58 · 02:08:19 · turn 0958 · scene 007]
02:11:51The Lantern of Empty Light
The party recalls a lantern Vollok kept, recovered earlier and never logged in Foundry (Venris had it in his bag of holding). Veve identifies it as the 'Lantern of Empty Light': a level-six item that flickers with the same pale-blue light that powered the Gauntlight, resurrected the dead, and harmed the party. On handling it she is frightened (drops it, briefly feeling 'the emptiness, the void') but recovers. Examining it, Abbas recognizes its resemblance to the failed lattice blueprints, concluding it is a failed experiment reworked into something else. The blue glow is tied to Nimbaloth / the empty death. [S58 · 02:15:58 · turn 1021 · scene 008]
02:30:32Piecing the Gauntlight together: lattice, lenses, and Vollok's role
A long lore synthesis. The GM walks the party through what they now understand: the Gauntlight teleports monsters and once raised the graveyard dead, the beam runs down the whole tower, the lattice is the steel 'skeleton/framework' that houses up to four lenses (like multiple magnifying glasses), and Vollok had a very direct hand in the lattice/lenses but his latest work was draining souls (Lazda). They debate whether the lenses are physical (the blueprints show a steel structure) or some magical/teleported energy-construct, since hauling lenses up thirteen floors seems impossible. Venris twice checked the cupola and found it empty both times — something is clearly missing up there. The GM rules they can't solve it all here and points them onward. [S58 · 02:34:34 · turn 1195 · scene 009]
03:15:02The ghost of Otari: 500 years, and the Rose Guard's bound souls
The party pushes through a stench hazard (failed saves; Cid sickened) and reaches the ghost of Otari, the Rose Guard companion left tending the great four-foot book on 'journal duty.' Tearful, he learns from them that roughly five hundred years have passed since the Rose Guard assaulted the Gauntlight. Touching the party's relics (Venice's key, Cid's sword/club, the cloak on Veve), he is stunned to sense his dead comrades: he believes each relic houses a fragment/memory of a Rose Guard soul, and that those souls never traveled the river of souls as he did. He reveals the book's final pages are magically locked, accessible only to their maker (a dwarf comrade he describes as a skilled but unsuspected necromancer), and that to read them the party must either find that comrade or sever the binding that traps these souls. He recalls, lying trapped, hearing Belcorra's scream echo from a floor below. [S58 · 03:23:22 · turn 1567 · scene 010]
03:49:00Wind-down: theories, Locate, and 'where else have we seen a bound soul?'
End-of-session theorizing. The party suspects the missing Rose Guard souls may be in an unexplored upper floor of the tower, possibly victims of the empty death or bound by a curse during the battle with Belcorra. They float casting Locate (500-ft range) and revisiting Wrin (Rin / 'Rune Fulcora') as someone who might know more. A secret recall/religion check by Abbas comes back confident that the souls are NOT actually inside the relics. The GM leaves them with a pointed prompt: the last time they saw a soul imbued into an object was 'Mr. Beak' / Mr. Beaker, the bird that carried the soul-gem meant for the puppet/doll. Session ends at midnight. [S58 · 03:52:55 · turn 1816 · scene 011]
