Session 57: Town Prep, the Sauna Ghasts, and a Boorish Champion

S57 Recap: Town Prep, the Sauna Ghasts, and a Boorish Champion

TL;DR

A planning-and-cleanup session. The party long-rested in Otari, researched the grave knights they're dreading (tied to their armor; anti-divine, but holy hurts them), and loaded up on Potions of Emergency Escape and fire-resistance gear to survive the cold "tyrant" stalking the Gauntlight. They returned to the vault, found the tower-top haunt gone, reactivated a teleportation portal (good for a year), and cleared the spa/sauna level — putting down four ghasts caged in changing stalls with a barrage of Electric Arc. In the saunas they ran into Merchan, an obnoxious gladiator-boxer wearing Hand Wraps of Mighty Blows who hassled Veve and wants a fight with the War Brew's owner. They picked a kicked-in locked door (Knock + Thievery) that just loops back to the ghost's secret hall, then called it. The back half of the recording is an out-of-game break, not campaign content.

Previously on

The party has the Gauntlight and its vault as their base of operations and has been clearing it level by level. A powerful "tyrant" / grave knight has been stalking them inside, and an earlier encounter saw a cold "ice cone" attack nearly kill two of them (~50 cold damage). Venris is now fighting with a clockwork metal arm.

Table note

Roughly the back half of this recording (from ~01:28 to the end) is an out-of-character break — a tech video and a long watch-along of the TV show "The Boys." It contains no campaign content and is excluded from the recap (flagged in the notes for review/redaction).

Scene timeline (9)
00:00:00Long rest in Otari and grave-knight research
The party takes a long rest in bustling Otari and recovers spell slots. While Veve keeps everyone topped off with Soothe, the group splits up to do downtime research. Someone visits Morlibint (Morblint) in the library to dig into the grave knights they've been dreading. Morlibint info-dumps: grave knights are tied to and created through their armor (rip enough of it off and that could weaken them), they carry powerful anti-divine 'unholy'/sacrilegious magic that can shut off or null divine magic by mere presence, but any holy damage greatly harms them once you get past their defenses — and they are among the best knight-warriors imaginable. The library has no book that actually describes grave knights. [S57 · 00:01:14 · turn 0013 · scene 001]
00:07:40Shopping: emergency-escape potions, fire-resistance gear, and a sold ring
The party shops to prep for the grave knight / 'tyrant' that has been stalking them in the Gauntlight (a creature that nearly killed two of them with an ice-cone, ~50-something cold reflex damage). They buy eight Potions of Emergency Escape (drinking one makes you fleeing from all hostiles for one minute with a +40 status bonus to Speed — you cannot choose to fight, like a Pokemon escape rope) so everyone carries two for a guaranteed bail-out. They look at fire-resistance items (a Cindergrass cloak / Charm of Resistance granting fire resistance 5) after realizing only fire damage was available against the cold tyrant. Venris tries to buy back a Ring of Wizardry he had sold; the buyer no longer has it, and the shopkeeper tells him to come back tomorrow. [S57 · 00:09:23 · turn 0088 · scene 002]
00:21:45Otari unavailable and map review of unexplored vault rooms
The party tries to call on Otari (the Rose Guard rogue) for information, but he is 'not ready' to answer — explicitly tied at the table to a player (Danny) being absent, so that thread is deferred ('come back tomorrow'). With time to spare, the group pulls up the vault maps (borrowed from Abbas) and methodically reviews which rooms they have and haven't explored across the upper levels: the arena complex, the gladiator/meatball trap rooms, the mummy chamber, the slime/jelly rooms, the serpents-in-the-water below, a torture chamber, a portal chamber moved off the tavern, and unexplored kitchen/storage/pantry, sauna and spa, caves, and reservoir. They settle on clearing the sauna/spa and the unactivated portal as easy next targets. [S57 · 00:21:35 · turn 0176 · scene 003]
00:41:45Back to the Gauntlight tower top — the haunt is gone
The party sneaks back through the vaults (avoiding the roaming grave knight) and Venris runs up to the top of the Gauntlight tower to check the haunt he previously fled from. The ghost does not appear, the bloodstains there and on the previous floor are gone, and the lattice/lens of the lighthouse-like beacon is missing — only the empty mount where the lens would sit remains. Nothing responds to him. He rejoins the party. [S57 · 00:41:58 · turn 0359 · scene 004]
00:43:30Reactivating the teleportation portal
Rather than risk the obvious portal, the party takes the stairs with lights off, Venris on point, and reaches the portal room. Abbas leads an hour-long attempt to reactivate an awakened-portal teleportation circle, with Veve and Venris assisting as secondary casters and Cid keeping watch. Venris crits the Occultism check (a 33), and the GM rules the portal will remain active for at least a year. [S57 · 00:45:04 · turn 0388 · scene 005]
00:47:57The sauna stalls and the four ghasts
The party explores the spa/sauna complex. Opening a long hall reveals a nasty stench of rot and four changing stalls rigged with makeshift clockwork mechanisms tied to a lever. When Venris peeks into a stall, a grey rotted hand lunges to grab him (he saves on reflex), and gnarling screams erupt from all four doors — each holds a ghast (a powerful king-of-the-ghouls ghoul), foaming, rabid, screaming cursed words in Common. Unable to melee or throw safely through the holes, the party puts them down by spamming Electric Arc cantrips (Abbas would use Divine Lance but doesn't want to risk blasting the doors). The ghasts die; the GM awards a hero point. The party searches the bodies (the clear source of the smell) and finds nothing but a roach. [S57 · 00:53:59 · turn 0475 · scene 006]
00:58:30Merchan the gladiator in the sauna
Searching the rest of the sauna rooms, the party finds them mostly empty traditional saunas until they open a stone round chamber holding a living NPC: Merchan ('Merci'), a self-styled boxer/pugilist gladiator wearing Hand Wraps of Mighty Blows. He is boorish and crudely sexist toward Veve, demanding she 'come sit next to the champ' (Venris and Cid deflect, calling her trouble). Merchan brags he has beaten everyone at the Cheeryman arena and wants a fight with 'Charlie'/'Vizhar', the owner of the War Brew, whom he calls a coward. He insults the party and they leave him. On the way out, Veve spots a small chest tucked under the bench behind him; Cid notices Merchan's Hand Wraps of Mighty Blows. The party leaves the chest for now. [S57 · 01:05:30 · turn 0575 · scene 007]
01:14:14Picking the locked door to the ghost's secret hall
The party investigates a scuffed, kicked-at steel locked door. Venris activates his Failing Key item to cast Knock, then picks the lock (Thievery, ~29) and after about thirty seconds finds a small set of stairs winding up. With his superior speed he runs to the top and confirms it just connects to the secret hallway leading to the room that had the ghost (Vollok). He reports back. The party agrees to leave the tavern run and a re-visit to Otari for next time, and the GM asks for a 'TLDR of the TLDR' recap entry. The in-game session effectively ends here, rolling into out-of-character scheduling talk and then a long break. [S57 · 01:14:41 · turn 0666 · scene 008]
01:17:47Scheduling talk and a long off-topic watch-party break
After the game wraps, the table discusses real-life scheduling (open days, who is unavailable, next week likely skipped). From roughly 01:28 onward the recording captures a very long off-topic break: audio from a YouTube tech video about 'Lossless Scaling', then an extended watch-along of episodes of the TV show 'The Boys' (Homelander's birthday special, Soldier Boy, Starlight, A-Train, Compound V, Vought). None of this is campaign content; it runs to the end of the file with no return to play. [S57 · 01:18:51 · turn 0710 · scene 009]
