Session 8: Lackeys of the Ghost Queen

S8 — Lackeys of the Ghost Queen

> Draft recap, agent-generated. Speakers are labeled A–D (A = GM); character names are best-effort and may be transcription-imperfect.

TL;DR

Posing as servants of the Ghost Queen, the party delivered the river drake's head to the morlock leader, took his guided tour and cult lore, then betrayed him: they freed three captured Osprey Club prisoners, slaughtered his tinker morlocks, and escaped to Otari. There they collected a 50-gold reward, sold and identified loot (a wayfinder, a +1 potential rune, a Fear Gem), crafted and re-geared, learned Otari's Rose Guard founding history, had Rin read the stars (a critical-success omen, revealed next session), and leveled up to 3.

Previously On

The party explored the big room beneath the lighthouse, fought morlocks and shadow creatures that stole their shadows and made clones, then struck a truce with a morlock leader who tasked them with killing a river drake. They slew the drake, took its head and treasure, and were heading back to deliver the trophy. (Recapped 00:00:11–00:05:43.)

00:00:00Recap of Session 7
Speaker B recaps the previous session: exploring the big room under the lighthouse, fighting morlocks, shadow creatures that stole the party's shadows and made clones, prying open sarcophagi/coffins (making noise), encountering a morlock leader who negotiated a truce and tasked the party with killing a drake/river dragon, then slaying the dragon and recovering its treasure. The party was about to deliver the dragon's head to the morlock leader. The GM's music intro interrupted the recap. [S8 · 00:00:11 · turn 0003 · scene 001]
00:06:40Delivering the Dragon's Head; Dubbed Lackeys of the Ghost Queen
The party returns to the morlock leader's throne room and presents the drake's head. The leader accepts the trophy and 'dubs' the party Lackeys of the Ghost Queen (the party self-styles as 'emissaries of the Ghost Queen'). He begins a guided tour of morlock territory, starting through a decorated hall and a trapped room (Venris notes he could disarm the traps). Two morlocks fiddle with a clockwork device worth a bit of gold. [S8 · 00:08:57 · turn 0069 · scene 002]
00:11:31Tour of Morlock Territory and Ghost Queen Lore
The morlock leader (named when the party angers him: Siddharth Malvin / 'Cid Malvin') walks the party room-to-room through filthy trash-strewn halls. He shares lore about the Ghost Queen: she is the morlocks' god who rules the vaults; they came up from deeper floors; they feed her bodies/flesh as offerings so she can 'come back to flesh.' He warns the party not to speak her name and rails against the 'heretic ghouls' from below (the Cult of the Canker). He points out the shrine, the prison (barred door), and stairs down to a library where the ghouls are. The party plays along as loyal lackeys while privately planning betrayal. [S8 · 00:17:41 · turn 0154 · scene 003]
00:35:21Planning the Betrayal
Out of the leader's earshot, the party debates next steps. They confirm the prisoners are the captured friends of the tavern lady (people from Otari with a guild tattoo) being saved as sacrifices. They decide to turn on the morlocks, isolating and killing them in groups, and to free/arm the prisoners. Venris sets caltrops and a spike snare near the tinkers' double doors. Cid proposes disguising Venris as a prisoner so they can approach the tinker morlocks under pretense; Venris dons a wig, fake mustache and spirit gum from his disguise kit. [S8 · 00:35:20 · turn 0309 · scene 004]
00:46:01Combat: The Tinker Morlocks and Makeshift Ballistas
Cid escorts the disguised Venris toward the tinkers, claiming the boss sent a sacrifice. One tinker morlock recognizes Venris as 'the elf' and grabs a makeshift ballista/projectile launcher, firing handfuls of junk for heavy damage. Combat breaks out: Abbas joins through the door (debate over initiative timing/door opening). The morlocks wield oversized non-standard weapons and war hammers and are surprisingly sturdy (walking on walls). Cid uses snagging strike, exacting strike and a hero point (crit); Venris uses sneak attacks and the 'Zoro' rapier flourish; Abbas casts divine lance ('divine lens'). Both tinker morlocks are killed. [S8 · 00:46:48 · turn 0414 · scene 005]
01:08:31Looting the Engineer Room and Freeing the Prisoners
After the fight the party loots the room (two war hammers, two makeshift projectile launchers - too broken/shoddy to be worth taking, eight handfuls of junk; Venris drags a corpse onto a caltrop). They open the barred door to the prison and free three starving prisoners marked with the Osprey Club tattoo. Inside the prison/well room they find three suits of studded leather armor, two rapiers + one broken rapier, a lesser healing potion, and 13 GP. Venris arms the prisoners (a dwarf, a halfling and a human) and re-sets the caltrop/snare traps. The party learns a fourth member of the prisoners' group is dead. [S8 · 01:11:19 · turn 0637 · scene 006]
01:25:01Escaping the Vaults; Fetching Veve
The party escorts the freed prisoners out of the vaults. Venris splits off to retrieve Veve (V V), who had been left (AFK player) near the teleportation room before the river drake cave; he sneaks back through the dungeon, avoiding notice, and recovers her. The GM notes he went back for Veve because he misremembered her location and worried the morlocks would find the corpses and then her. The party reunites and exits to the surface. [S8 · 01:25:25 · turn 0792 · scene 007]
01:35:01Journey Back to Otari; The Wandering Stranger
On the road back to Otari the party passes a strange wandering figure with a big backpack 'like the Majora's Mask hat seller' (and a long real-time break while the GM looked things up). They ignore him. The prisoners recount how their group (the Osprey Club) came down through the pier seeking loot, ran into morlocks and a river drake, and got captured. The party debates whether to tell the survivors about their dead companion. They escort everyone to the tavern in Otari. [S8 · 01:59:32 · turn 0952 · scene 008]
02:04:05The Tavern Lady, the Osprey Club, and the 50 Gold Reward
The party delivers the freed prisoners to the tavern lady in Otari, who is grateful. She rewards the party the agreed 50 gold and reveals the rescued group is the Osprey Club, a low-tier Otari thieves' guild / fences. She offers future work and lets the party stay the night free. Venris shows her his sorted loot (a crimson red bloodstone, a runestone, a sickly obsidian gem, an ornate compass). She identifies the bloodstone (sells it for 15 gold), the runestone (a +1 weapon potency 'potential' rune, found on the altar base), and the ornate compass as a Pathfinder Society wayfinder. [S8 · 02:05:10 · turn 1000 · scene 009]
02:16:41Downtime: Shopping, Crafting, and Identifying Items
Over a long rest and a day (or two) of downtime in Otari the party shops and crafts. Venris sells his half-plate, transfers his weapon potency rune to his short bow, then later buys a kukri and transfers a +1 rune to it (selling the rapier) so he gains an agile weapon. Cid commissions a cold-iron +1 rapier with backswing from the blacksmith (44 gp, partly funded by selling a +1 war hammer and a small loan from Venris, 'with interest'). Abbas sells a comprehension elixir and a skeptic's elixir to Rin and consults her about the unidentified items: the sickly obsidian gem is identified as a Fear Gem. The wayfinder is given to Cid. Quest gold (12 gp each, plus split bloodstone money) is distributed. [S8 · 02:22:45 · turn 1182 · scene 010]
02:46:06Otari History and Rin Reads the Stars
Cid visits the Odd Stories bookshop (run by a red-haired bespectacled keeper) to research Otari and the Gauntlight keep: the Rose Guard, led by figures from Absalom, came to investigate the keep over rumors of a dark magician (the horror); they fought and won, Otari died, the keep was abandoned and the survivors founded the town of Otari. The mayor's family later built the Plume of Otari (a log flume) that revived the lumber-export economy. The keeper offers to buy curious books. Later, Rin offers to read the stars for the party using her astrology lore; on a critical success she gains a cryptic omen/clue about the party's next week (to be revealed next session). [S8 · 02:49:48 · turn 1409 · scene 011]
03:05:40Level Up to Level 3 and Session Wrap
The party hits level 3. Venris becomes an expert in thievery, takes Fleet (now 40 speed) and Shadow Mark, and notes his innate dodge against equal/lower-level creatures. Abbas takes Continual Recovery and becomes a medicine expert. Cid takes Fleet. An extended rules debate runs about the Terrain Stalker feat versus Feather Step and how avoiding-notice stealth checks work in difficult terrain (rubble), left unresolved with a pin. The GM defers revealing Rin's star-reading omen until next session. Session ends. [S8 · 03:05:40 · turn 1528 · scene 012]
