Session 48: Flesh-Warped Barbers, the Tentacled Guardian, and the Chained Sagathi

S48 Recap: Flesh-Warped Barbers, the Tentacled Guardian, and the Chained Sagathi

TL;DR

On a new vault floor crawling with Morlocks and flesh-warpers, the party fought through three encounters in one marathon session. First: the Absalom bounty hunters they'd met before — now flesh-warped into hulking abominations that explode in "cancer blood" on death — whom they ground down and looted (turning up a wanted poster and a journal that outed the squad as the Bloody Barbers, an Absalom barber-gang). Second: a huge, scarred, already-frightened flesh-warped elf with 20-foot tentacles and a mind-lashing attack, guarding a stairway down to the devils; it nearly stunned Venerus to death before the party put it down. Third: a chained, Aklo-speaking Sagathi (with a Grothlet pet) who turned on them as "intruders" and was one-shot by Venerus — but he was a weak one, NOT the named Sagathi they're hunting. The session ended on a cliffhanger: Venerus's F10 key fit a plinth and a sealed laboratory door began to open.

Previously on

The party had been exploring a new floor and the Warp Brew tavern, where the Morlocks are eager to be flesh-warped by the Sagathi while the band and other patrons stay neutral. Cid talked to a Morlock bartender who told them about the Sagathi roaming this floor. They believe a specific named Sagathi is here, and their current goal is to push through the double doors and figure out what's going on.

Scene timeline (10)
00:00:16Pregame: setup, prep banter, and the Morlock mini
Players gather, deal with Foundry/Unity load times, and joke around. The GM (Speaker A) admits he salts the asset list with random mobs so the party can't metagame the encounter, and there's table chatter about characters leaving the party if absent players (Rod/Golm) don't return. The GM points out everyone's new Morlock mini before calling for a recap. [S48 · 00:03:35 · turn 0040 · scene 001]
00:05:11Recap: the Warp Brew tavern, the Sagathi, and the new floor
The party recaps last session: they did a 'bardic barging' bit, learned a shadowy figure is likely a Sagathi (flesh-warper), and explored the Warp Brew tavern where the Morlocks are eager to be flesh-warped by the Sagathi while the band and others stay neutral. Cid spoke with a Morlock bartender who mentioned the Sagathi. The GM cleans up the map (a frosted/opaque gated wall, a grate leading down, added stairs). The party's stated goal: open the double doors on this new floor and possibly find the named Sagathi. They take a short break. [S48 · 00:09:20 · turn 0094 · scene 002]
00:24:03Opening the doors: the flesh-warped bounty hunters charge
The party advances in darkness toward distant heavy thudding. Venerus crashes a door open on a nat-1, rolling everyone into initiative. Cid peeks out and recognizes a squad of meaty, hulked-out flesh-warped humanoids with war razors led by a dwarf — the same Absalom 'fake guards' / bounty hunters the party once met, who set out to capture the party's bounty and have since been flesh-warped into hyper-aggressive abominations. There is an extended ruling debate about combining stealth and initiative into one roll. The party kills the lights, Cid raises a martial aura and shield, and the bruisers charge. [S48 · 00:25:14 · turn 0192 · scene 003]
00:55:02The exploding-blood brawl
A long, grinding fight against the flesh-warped bounty hunters. Venerus opens with a rapier sneak-attack crit (53 damage); Cid flanks and tanks behind a tower shield while his martial/Dread aura buffs the party; Abbas chips in with Divine Lance; Veve throws rocks and daggers and sustains Courageous/Rallying and Lingering Composition songs. The enemies explode in 'cancer blood' on death, forcing reflex saves on everyone nearby (the tower shield helps cover Veve/Venerus). One bruiser swaps to a crossbow and critically shoots his own ally in the back. A demoralize lands frightened on Venerus, and at least one PC catches 'Bellstreck Tetanus' from the flesh-warp affliction. The party grinds the squad down to nothing. [S48 · 01:16:01 · turn 0656 · scene 004]
02:34:30Looting the bodies: the wanted poster and the Bloody Barbers' journal
The party loots the dead: three war razors (one +1), a regular crossbow with ~18 bolts, simple manacles, a climbing kit, a wanted poster (30gp bounty on a red-haired tiefling bounty hunter, with island locations noted on the back including a crossed-out town, Otari, and a lighthouse), and a locked journal stamped with a shaving-knife/barber symbol. Cid treats Venerus's lingering affliction with Medicine (suppressing a clumsy condition that will worsen in about a week). Cid recaps the floor's lore for the party: a beat-up devil named Aravian/Rabian one floor below, contracted by Belcorra to raise her an army, now trapped honoring the contract since 'the Cora is dead'; plus the Zebub janitor (Sazlarin) and the Vordeen Horloc prison-guard the party met earlier. [S48 · 02:37:47 · turn 1445 · scene 005]
03:16:31The Bloody Barbers revealed; the abomination guarding the stairs
Venerus picks the journal's lock; it logs targets, marks an unimportant low-level gang affiliate, and confirms the squad belonged to the Bloody Barbers — an Absalom barber-gang that 'gives a Crimson Shave' (cuts throats), runs burglary and narcotics, and could be a whole side-campaign if the party wanted. Manny (Venerus's player) has to leave to pick up his kids, so the GM keeps the session going. Listening at a door, the party hears rasping; they open it on a holding-cell room (shackles, fetters, bloodstains) with double doors, two staircases leading down, and a massive horrifying abomination standing guard above the stairs. They roll initiative. [S48 · 03:21:53 · turn 1811 · scene 006]
03:38:03The tentacled guardian: a near-deadly fight
A dangerous fight against the abomination — a huge, scarred, battle-hardened flesh-warped creature (later identified as a cruelly flesh-warped elf, ~level 11) with 20-foot tentacle reach and a mind-lashing attack. It crits Venerus for 38 and stuns/paralyzes him with an emotional/occult 'empty void' vision, and slashes a nerve (slowed). Oddly, the creature is already frightened of something. With Venerus's player away for part of it (Speaker B also running Veve/'VV'), Cid tanks with Champion's reaction and tower shield, Abbas casts Holy Light, and the party slowly wheels it down with hero points until it dies. The party debates afterward whether they should have spent time on recall knowledge before charging in. [S48 · 03:49:06 · turn 2076 · scene 007]
04:27:41Identifying the guardian; scouting the side rooms
A recall-knowledge identifies the abomination as a flesh-warped elf (twisted into misplaced limbs, loose flesh, and bony protrusions), most likely yet another Sagathi experiment set to guard the stairs down. Veve (run by Speaker B as a second sheet) does a thorough search and spots something shiny. The party scouts: a Zebub/devil flying in a hallway (identical to the 'cleaner boy' devil), a slime/tomb-jelly room digesting Morlock corpses (loot left intact: steel shield, chain shirt, pick, caltrops, chains — they leave it as a predictable fight for later), an old prison area whose dust shows a single hoofed devil trail and a large worm-creature's drag marks, and a cave sloping down. They decide not to chase the named Sagathi down the devil stairs and instead push on. [S48 · 04:48:37 · turn 2640 · scene 008]
05:25:06The chained Sagathi: 'You must be the intruders!'
Peeking through doors, the party finds a Sagathi chained near a handrail beside a stairway with a dim orange glow and sulfurous stench rising from far below (the devils). The Sagathi speaks Aklo (only Abbas understands it), calling out to a Grothlet guardian before turning on the party as 'intruders.' The Grothlet has a sickening 'Pidus Moan' aura; the worm-like Sagathi squeezes through five-foot gaps and wields a longsword from a serpentine tail. It proves notably weaker than the previous guardian. Venerus drops it in a single Sonic-Blow barrage on his turn. [S48 · 06:02:43 · turn 3243 · scene 009]
06:21:38Grothlet mop-up, Sagathi loot, and the cliffhanger laboratory door
The party finishes the Grothlet (a Divine Lance crit + chakram), then loots the dead Sagathi: a plain longsword, a venomous bite, an alchemical/chemical toolkit, a key for the Grothlet's manacles, and a wand of See Invisibility (2nd-rank). They conclude this 'weak' Sagathi is NOT the named one (Jafaki/'Jeff Key') and plan to go back to the mummy NPC (Chafkin/Shefkin) for hints on identifying the real one, or research at the library. Exploring on, they find a clairvoyant transparent-stone wall overlooking a flooded cavern with two still huge formations (presumed hydras), and reach a laboratory antechamber with two keyed plinths and a handleless door. Venerus's F10 key fits the eastern plinth and the door starts to open — the session ends on this cliffhanger. [S48 · 06:35:32 · turn 3597 · scene 010]
