The Dawnflower Library is Otari's main public library and a temple to the sun goddess Sarenrae, situated near the graveyard at a cliff edge [S4; S11]. It is staffed by the priest Bandy Vanderbesch and offers research support, retraining, and spell discounts to friendly visitors [S11; S29]. Its signature sunrise dome produces a dramatic light display, and it holds secret texts on the gods, town histories, and materials on undead, mummies, and fungi [S25; S38]. The library's history with the party spans decades of escalating crises. It displayed Carman's family heirloom sword (the Rose Argent/Rose Gente) on a pedestal until a section was set ablaze with alchemist's fire during the sword's theft [S19]. Carman was subsequently tried and sentenced to a year of public service restoring the damaged wing [S25]. The library then became the town's quarantine hub during the filth-fever outbreak, housing the sick including Father Thalos and Aren while Cid slept there [S29; S30]. Through the mid-campaign the library remained a primary research base: the party returned to use its isolation room and collections on undead and gathered journals during a second quarantine event [S38], treated the afflicted Venris there and proposed monitoring his nightmares [S39], and consulted its holdings on grave knights alongside Morlibint — only to find no volume directly describing them [S57]. Abbas used it to study and learn the Locate spell [S50]. As of S59, a vault library floor the party uses as a routing and staging area shares this canon entry, though its precise identification with the Otari Dawnflower Library is uncertain. S64 brings the Dawnflower back as a support site: Cid obtains holy water and Rajani/Nidal lore from Bandy, and the party later uses Dawnflower Church/Library research to identify contract-devil and grave-knight traits.
1 open hook remain on this record.
The Dawnflower Library first appears as little more than a landmark: during the undead surge of the early sessions, the party simply pushed around the cliff-edge building as shambling dead threw themselves off the precipice beside it [S4]. It is not yet a place of consequence — just geography.
That changes when the party begins using Otari as a home base. The library is properly introduced as a dual-purpose institution: temple to Sarenrae, staffed by priest Bandy Vanderdash (later confirmed as Bandy Vanderbesch), with a sunrise dome that floods the reading room in theatrical golden light. It provides research access, retraining, and discounts on divine spell services, and it serves as the source of the missing-adventurers quest that draws the party toward the Abomination Vaults in earnest [S11]. The building also holds a personal artifact of some significance to Carman — the family heirloom sword called the Rose Gente (or Rose Argent), displayed on a pedestal in the public hall.
The library's first real wound comes from within the party's own orbit. During the theft of the Rose Argent, a section of the building is set ablaze with alchemist's fire — the fire used as a distraction, smoke venting through the sunroof — and the display pedestal is left empty [S19]. Council member Vandy is found at the library in the immediate aftermath [S20]. When the matter reaches the Otari council, Carman is tried for the arson and sentenced to a year of public service restoring the damaged wing [S25]. The library holds secret texts on the gods and town histories; Carman's sentence implicates her in the preservation of those materials as much as the physical structure.
The library's next transformation is civic rather than personal. When filth fever spreads through Otari, the Dawnflower Library — already a temple — is locked down as the town's primary quarantine site [S29]. Father Thalos and the NPC Aren are treated there; Cid sleeps in the building during this stretch [S30]. The combination of religious authority, isolation capacity, and Vanderbesch's presence makes it the natural center for the crisis.
By the mid-campaign the library's isolation room and document collections have become a recurring tool. When a second crisis requiring quarantine and research arises, the party immediately routes back to the Dawnflower [S38] — the building's layout, its holdings on undead, mummies, plants, and fungi, and the gathered journals from prior investigations all prove useful. The party treats the afflicted Venris here and proposes keeping him on-site so his nightmares can be observed in a controlled setting [S39].
Abbas makes a dedicated visit during a downtime stretch to study the Locate spell, spending three hours in the stacks before learning it; the building grants a +1 bonus to creating forgeries, deciphering writing, and learning spells for friendly visitors, and the staff member on duty — a "Vandy/Vendy" — is consulted about a curse but cannot assist [S50].
When the party needs to understand grave knights and the "empty death," the library is the first research destination named, alongside gauntlight materials and the "whispering reads" [S56]. A formal research session with Morlibint follows, but the library's holdings turn out not to include any volume directly describing grave knights [S57]. The absence is itself informative — the Dawnflower Library is deep in Otari lore and divine scholarship but has limits when confronted with the more esoteric horrors inside the Vaults.
Deeper into the campaign, the party uses a portal exit from inside the vault that deposits them at or near the Dawnflower Library, and the arriving prisoners marvel at the books [S49]. This moment quietly underlines the building's role as the boundary between the town's legible, mapped world and the dungeon beneath it.
In sessions 058 and 059, a third-floor vault library is used as a routing hub and tactical staging area — the party passes through it tensely to avoid a Grave Knight, noting bloody greave-prints and earlier portal activity, and on a later pass they lay a false trail of knocked-over books to lose their pursuer [S58; S59]. The packet notes that the vault library's identity as the Dawnflower Library proper is uncertain at this stage; it may be a separate dungeon floor sharing the same canon entry.
As of S59, the Dawnflower Library remains a live institution in Otari — research resource, temple, quarantine site — with its connections to the deeper levels of the Abomination Vaults still being mapped.
S64 uses the Dawnflower in both of those support modes. Cid visits Bandy there and receives two holy waters plus Rajani/Nidal lore [S64, 01:16:22; S64, 01:19:53; S64, 01:25:30]. The following morning, the party researches Uravian/Erevian and the grave knight through Dawnflower Church/Library resources, learning contract-devil traits and grave-knight danger signals before returning to the vault [S64, 03:50:30; S64, 03:51:52; S64, 03:54:11].
