Session 43: The Rusted Hand, the Flesh-Heaps, and a Shadow in the Cells

S43 Recap: The Rusted Hand, the Flesh-Heaps, and a Shadow in the Cells

TL;DR

A quieter, exploration-and-cleanup session that ended in a long table conversation rather than a boss. The party finished looting the chain room (Venris caught a disease grabbing a chain carelessly with his clockwork arm), portaled back to Otari to rest and argue about anti-plague potions, then pushed back into the vault. They cleared a prison-cell room full of popping flesh-heaps (loot: a copper key), pressed on through a portcullis hall, and ran into a shadow that ganked Cid and spawned a clone of him. A mid-combat dispute over whether Venris's ghost-touch rune lets his precision damage hurt the shadow — on top of an earlier scouting-bonus argument — boiled over: Venris's player stepped away frustrated and another player dropped, so play stopped for a long, frank out-of-game discussion about house rules, GM style, and not relitigating mechanics mid-session. The Venris player came back, apologized, and the group agreed to lock the ruling for the night and revisit the ghost-touch precision question before the next session.

Previously on

The party was right outside the mummy's room and kept exploring: a room with a ghost/haunt, then a room with chains where a chain creature nearly killed Cid before they put it down. As that fight ended they heard a laughing, tengu/raven-crow-like creature; Venris acrobatically leaped to catch it, but it was an illusion (a mirror-image-style trick) and the real spellcaster-thing escaped down the stairs. There was also a room with medical/medicine stuff that held no encounter.

Scene timeline (9)
00:00:55Pregame chatter and tech setup
Players wait on a member who is dealing with their kids, fight with streaming/connection ('learn how to cloud'), and joke around before the GM gets the map and recap going. [S43 · 00:00:55 · turn 0001 · scene 001]
00:05:38Recap: the chain creature and the laughing bird
The party reconstructs where they left off: they were right outside the mummy's room, then explored a room with a ghost/haunt and a room with chains, where a chain creature nearly killed Cid before they defeated it. As the fight ended they heard a laughing tengu/raven-crow-like creature; Venris acrobatically leaped to catch it but it turned out to be an illusion (a 'mirror image' style trick) and the real creature escaped down the stairs. Venris recall-knowledges it as some kind of spellcaster having fun with them. The party also notes a room with medicine/medical stuff that had no encounter. [S43 · 00:05:46 · turn 0017 · scene 002]
00:14:43Looting the chain room and the rusted-hand disease scare
The party searches the cleared chain room (Venris using Expeditious Search) and a rusted crate/grate down a drop. Venris realizes he grabbed a chain carelessly and may have caught a disease, asking the party caster to 'clean my rust-covered hand' (he now fights with a metal/clockwork arm he uses to touch suspicious things first). They examine corpses on the stairs for sword-slash wounds, comparing them to something seen back at the library. Venris is exhausted and tired and pushes to portal back to town rather than risk more encounters or another mummy/disease. [S43 · 00:16:06 · turn 0089 · scene 003]
00:36:45Town rest and the great anti-plague / Cleanse Affliction debate
The party portals back to Otari to rest. A long out-of-combat rules debate covers how to handle the lurking disease: Antidote is only for poison, Elixir of Life only lasts ten minutes, and the eight-hour disease onset is brutal. They settle on buying lesser Anti-plague (3 GP, +2 to the save) and otherwise waiting until symptoms show before spending money. They argue whether a prepared Cleanse Affliction simply suppresses an affliction or only counteracts on a save, and decide to ignore it until symptoms appear, then go full-blast with a heightened Cleanse Affliction. They rest at the inn; the GM (and a player) catch up on reading Tharnax's / the other guy's diary, gleaning no new info. [S43 · 00:48:36 · turn 0282 · scene 004]
01:16:47Back into the vault: the prison cells and the flesh-heaps
After a long rest (Sunday the 19th), the party heads back in, taking the long way around to avoid the fungus. Venris scouts ahead (Lights off, avoiding notice) into a prison-like room of cells. The first two cells are quiet; the third holds irregularly 'popping' heaps of flesh that look like monsters waiting to animate. The party debates whether it's worth the risk of disease for little obvious loot, guessing the place is where the Seugathi keep and experiment on prisoners to make gladiator fodder. Venris notes Veve's kinetic hand could try to dig out something shiny through the bars. [S43 · 01:22:07 · turn 0423 · scene 005]
01:35:01Combat: smashing the flesh-heaps
The party fights the popping flesh-heap creatures, which are resistant (slashing weapons are bad; bludgeoning is better, per what they learned from the jelly/slime). Venris swaps to throwing weapons — a bola/bowler, light hammers, and chakram from his thrower's bandolier — landing sneak-attack damage on off-guard targets set up by Cid's flanking. The bard supports with Courageous/Lingering Anthem; the cleric-caster sustains Vitality Lash. Venris takes bleed and ~23 damage in the exchange but the party grinds the creatures down. They loot the cells afterward and find a copper key. [S43 · 01:39:40 · turn 0514 · scene 006]
02:10:16The portcullis hall and the shadow ambush
The party returns toward the hallway where Venris failed to catch the laughing bird. They light-open a portcullis (worried about what melted the bars), and Cid wants to jam the gate/lever open with a dagger in case of a trap or being cut off. Venris (now touching things with his metal arm first) explores ahead. They find more bodies and skeletons. A shadow ambushes and ganks Cid, then spawns a clone/shadow of Cid (Cid shadow). Venris flanks with his freely-transformed Ghost Touch blade for sneak attack, and this triggers a long mid-combat rules argument over whether his precision damage works against the shadow given his ghost-touch rune (a previously-agreed homebrew). Venris records both his with-precision (19/23) and without-precision (11/15) numbers and says he'll take the lower for now. During this stretch one player (the Venris player) goes quiet/leaves to feed a pet, and another player leaves the call. [S43 · 02:22:26 · turn 0805 · scene 007]
03:13:58Out-of-game: the precision-damage / house-rule blowup
A long table-level (out-of-character) discussion. The Venris player has quietly left after frustration built up (mini placement, getting hit at the start of fights, and a strength-draining status crippling a strength-based build), and the bard's player also dropped, so play stops. The remaining player and the GM debate whether mid-session is the right time to relitigate house rules (scouting +1 to initiative; precision damage vs ghosts via the ghost-touch rune), the player advocating 'pick a ruling fast, play on, and discuss it after the session,' and floating that the GM could simply rule things his way silently rather than asking players to argue. They dig into GM-vs-player friction, whether Pathfinder's rules-heaviness suits this GM's improvisational style, and the importance of documenting house rules in the Discord 'house rules' channel. [S43 · 03:43:15 · turn 1172 · scene 008]
04:08:55The Venris player returns; apology and 'play it, discuss it later'
The Venris player rejoins and apologizes, explaining he wasn't angry or in disagreement but frustrated (frustration compounding after a hard day at work) and stepped away to feed his pet without announcing it. The conversation continues to the core philosophical split: one side wants to suspend disbelief and not require every mechanic to 'make sense' in-world ('I don't care how scouting works, it works magically — let me just play'), while the GM prizes rules-as-written consistency and fairness so that a character death always feels fair. They land on a working agreement for the immediate dispute: for the running session the GM's ruling stands and cannot change mid-game; any change to a previously-agreed homebrew (the ghost-touch precision rule) happens out of session and gets documented. They agree to revisit the ghost-touch precision question calmly before the next (Sunday morning) session and end the night. [S43 · 04:09:25 · turn 1280 · scene 009]
