Awakened portal teleportation circles

concept active

Current state

Awakened portal teleportation circles are an ancient network of silver-fitted magical transit rooms distributed across every level of the Gauntlight vault. When first encountered, the circles were inert and their destinations unknown; Abus could not activate the one found hidden behind an ajar brick [S10 03:00:26]. The party learned that reactivating a circle requires a rare 'awakened portal' spell from an arcana or occultism caster, or—if the silver fittings have been stripped—the full teleportation circle ritual at roughly 500 gp [S11 00:25:51]. One first-floor portal had its silver ripped out and was judged defunct; rebuilding it was deemed too expensive at 500 gold [S25 00:04:01][S59 02:07:26]. The party first successfully linked and reactivated two circles, earning 30 XP per teleport [S26 02:22:38]. As exploration deepened, the network became a practical transit spine. The second-floor silver circle was used to route toward deeper floors after the first-floor one failed [S36 01:44:39]. During a tense escape attempt Venris attuned a third circle via a roughly one-hour ritual, though the effort left him Stupefied [S37 02:50:16]. Later, Veneros fully repaired and attuned the two-way circle in the gladiator room via the Awakened Portal occultism ritual—solo, no secondary caster needed—with objects passing through receiving a sigil on the forehead [S41 04:14:36]. A critical Occultism success during one activation set a circle active for at least a full year [S57 00:45:04]. By S58, the mechanics were well understood: activating a portal takes about an hour and can critically succeed (year-long duration) or fail with unintended consequences; once live, stepping into the center teleports the user instantly, and the entrant gains a HUD-like sense of which connected exits are available, though not live feeds of destinations [S58 01:00:51]. As of [S59], Venris could sense allied presences within a connected portal and speculated he might detect the grave knight the same way; the network continues to serve as the party's primary means of moving between vault floors.

Why this matters now

Latest recorded development
  • S59 The vault's teleportation circles, used this session to route between floors. Venris keenly senses allies' presence within a portal and could likely sense the grave knight if he were in a connected portal. One first-floor portal is inactive and would cost 500 gold to repair/activate — judged too… [S59 · 00:25:42 · turn 0239]

Recorded beats

  • S10 Party finds an empty, inactive silver teleport room behind a brick; Abus cannot activate it. [S10 · 03:00:23 · turn 1868]
  • S11 Learn reactivation needs a rare ritual plus a rare 'awakened/waking portal' spell; activation knowledge likely lost or inside the Gauntlight. [S11 · 00:24:27 · turn 0218]
  • S25 The first-floor portal is found gutted of its silver and defunct; others just need activation. [S25 · 00:03:30 · turn 0027]
  • S26 Party reactivates and links two circles, gaining 30 XP per teleport. [S26 · 00:07:58 · turn 0082]
  • S36 The teleportation/awakened portals used to move between levels of the Vaults. This session the party confirms the portal is still active and uses the second-floor silver circle, since the first-floor one was non-functional for lack of the silver. It takes them toward the deeper floors (Cid recalls… [S36 · 01:44:31 · turn 0424]
  • S37 The vault's network of teleportation circles, which act like an elevator between floors (the party recalls one going second-to-third, possibly second-to-fourth). This session they find and begin activating a third such circle (a ~1-hour caster attunement) as an escape route. The circle's… [S37 · 02:44:55 · turn 0787]
  • S40 Teleport circles in the dungeon the party has not yet activated. They debate using the portal as a shortcut to a deeper level versus dealing with the mummy first; the ritual to activate it failed before and left Venris feeling unwell. [S40 · 02:02:46 · turn 0732]
  • S41 A two-way teleportation circle in the skeleton/gladiator room, active in both directions. The party tested it by throwing objects through (nothing returned after ten minutes) and left it; later Venris repaired/attuned it via the Awakened Portal occultism ritual (trained in occultism, ~1 hour, no… [S41 · 00:12:38 · turn 0065]
  • S42 The awakened-portal teleportation system the party has been using. Referenced in the recap: the mummy explained the portal can be 'thrown' from the Coliseum to reach Victoria, and the party returns to the portal room this session before exploring the far wing. Carry-over canonical concept. [S42 · 00:01:51 · turn 0003]
  • S44 Reusing the canon awakened-portal network. Referenced this session when the host directs the party toward 'the room with the portal that the skull came from' as a navigation landmark connecting the arena area to previously explored portal rooms. [S44 · 02:12:29 · turn 1232]
  • S56 A network of teleportation-circle rooms in the dungeon that the party uses to floor-hop. Activated by an interact action while standing on the circle; teleportation is effectively instant. The party has used these rooms as rest-up spots. They escaped the grave knight by routing through circles to… [S56 · 03:17:01 · turn 4065]
  • S57 An awakened-portal teleportation circle in the vault that the party reactivates this session via an hour-long ritual (Abbas primary, Veve/Venris secondary casters). A crit Occultism check sets it active for at least a year; an additional portal chamber off the tavern is noted as moved/unexplored.… [S57 · 00:38:09 · turn 0324]
  • S58 The vault's network of teleport rooms the party activates floor by floor. Activating one takes ~an hour and can fail (with unintended consequences) or, on a crit, last a full year. Each activated portal behaves like a hallway: stepping in gives a memory/HUD-like sense of where each connected… [S58 · 00:46:04 · turn 0403]
