Otari (Rose Guard rogue) is the legendary rogue of the Rose Guard adventuring company, whose name the coastal town of Otari bears in his memory. He first appears in the party's awareness in [S1] as the group's rogue who was swallowed into a sinkhole and died inside Gauntlight Keep. A devil's-memory vision later in [S15] corrects the long-held assumption that he perished above: the vision shows a wounded rogue crashing through a ceiling cave-in into the washroom, scratching a 'save me below' message before pushing toward the green-light room. In [S28] the party finally meets him directly — his rotted ghost is bound to a flooded island deep in the lower vaults, afflicted with Field Fever and still clutching his rapier. He died alone after Belcorra's attack drove him below and a cave creature finished him off. He wept to learn the town bears his name and that the Rose Guard survived. He gave the party his Kalin Key, named the other three relic icons, and asked for help breaking the magical barrier. A [S39] family painting reveals Tarnak as Otari's son, confirming the Ilvashti bloodline. By [S51] the GM recaps the fuller sequence: he fled wounded through the library to the cave, was killed by the cave creature, and his soul lingered. In [S54] the party learns his soul is trapped not by his disease but by the Gauntlight's connection to souls; his memory is failing ('dementia') and Abbas casts peaceful rest on him. Serving as 'journal duty' keeper of Zarmavdian's great book by [S58], he senses his dead comrades through the party's relics and concludes each relic holds a fragment of a Rose Guard soul that never crossed the river of souls — and that roughly 500 years have passed since the assault on Gauntlight. As of [S59], he remains the party's primary living link to the Rose Guard's history, though his memory and condition continue to deteriorate.
