Lazda is a dwarf with a distinctive red beard, the son of the proprietor of the Rowdy Rockfish tavern in Otari (the Vangerdale family). He first came to the party's attention in [S11] when his mother reported him missing for years and feared him dead. He had been lured into the Gauntlight long ago by a pale blue light in the woods — the lantern of empty light [S24]. Inside the vaults, he was bound to a table within a ritual ribbon of light that wounded and healed him in a continuous loop, making him an "unusually durable" subject in Vollok's notes [S58]. The chained blue-skinned woman tortured him, the Leech Man experimented on him, and the void creature watched over him — all while the draining ritual fed power to the Gauntlight itself [S26]. The party rescued Lazda in [S24], returning him alive to his grateful mother. During the rescue, Belcorra briefly possessed and spoke through him. His liberation was progress against the Gauntlight but did not fully shut it down [S25]. Back at the Rockfish, Lazda recounted his captivity and named two captors — Vaughrrest and Volo — revealing that at least two more sentient enemies remained in the vaults [S26]. As of [S58], the party revisited the now-empty, blood-stained draining chamber in Vollok's study and confirmed the ritual light was gone and the town had not been attacked since Lazda's rescue. By [S59] the party used the location of the chamber — overlapping the center of the Gauntlight — as a positional anchor when mapping the vault floors, with Lazda's role as a living conduit retrospectively understood as a key mechanism in awakening the Gauntlight.
