Calino Lafanar

npc active

Current state

Calino Lafanar is the owner and manager of the Otari market, a rough-edged merchant figure who leads a group of pelt-wearing traders. First encountered in [S11], he was already struggling to keep order among his merchants amid the chaos following the reopening of Gauntlight. He directed the party to Patricio for rune work, offered guard and intimidation work, and bought wolf and warg pelts above market rate, while warning them away from the Stone Ring Pond druids. His deeper motivation emerged in [S14]: he is a widower who believes his wife was murdered roughly thirty years ago by a werewolf serial killer, and he has been collecting wolf and werewolf pelts ever since. He posted the werewolf bounty himself and hired the Fangbreakers bounty hunters to pursue it. When the party informed him in [S15] that the Fangbreakers had entered the keep and become ghouls, he remained focused on getting confirmation that the werewolf "Jasper" was truly dead. The party became his primary bounty-hunting contractors. In [S25] it was established that the werewolf Jaul had murdered his wife and kept her bejeweled porpoise necklace — engraved "Ila" — as a trophy, which the party recovered to return to him. In [S26] he paid out double bounty plus extra (approximately 27 gold 5 silver) for the werewolf's head, purchased a tainted striking guitar for 100 gold, and gave the party a 20 percent merchant discount voucher along with an ongoing offer of patrol work. By [S27] he was functioning as the party's established quest-giver and coin patron in Otari, buying further items including two qatars at 100 gold each. As of [S36], Calino Lafanar's name appears attached to a skeleton key in Venris's possession — referenced as the "Kalin/Calino key" — though the context of that association was not detailed.

  • S11 Runs/manages the Otari market (the 'Irish' leader of a group of rough, pelt-wearing humans). Admits he can't keep control of merchants amid post-Gauntlight chaos. Directs Veve to merchant Patricio for rune work, offers a guard/intimidation job, buys wolf/warg pelts above market rate, and warns about boys from the 'Stone Ring… [S11 · 02:13:58 · turn 1230]
  • S13 The owner of the Otari market. Mentioned by the werewolf hunters as someone the party should have talked to about the werewolf hunt; the hunters mock that Veve embarrassed herself at his market and that Calino didn't even bother telling them about the hunt. [S13]
  • S14 Otari market figure who posted the werewolf bounty and hired the 'fang breaker' bounty hunters. A widower and collector of wolf/werewolf pelts; his wife was murdered ~30 years ago by a serial killer he believes to be a werewolf. Offered to double the bounty and to buy any wolf pelts at high price. Speaks ill of the Stone Ring Pond druids. [S14]
  • S15 An Otari market merchant who hired the Fangbreakers bounty hunters. Learns from the party they went into the keep and became ghouls. Still wants the werewolf 'Jasper' confirmed dead so he can rest easy. [S15 · 02:02:20 · turn 1276]
