Jaul Mezmin is a werewolf and serial killer who posed as a druid in Otari and maintained a lair — a deep lake cavern with a stone pavilion — within the Gauntlight Keep. Roughly thirty years before the campaign began, he carried out a murder spree in Otari, mauling and eating his victims, including the wife of the merchant Calino Lathenar; he hid among the Stone Ring Pond druids before being chased to the sea and losing the town's pursuit [S14]. An open bounty existed on him in Otari, with hunters actively tracking him inside the Gauntlight by S13 [S13]. The party first found him in human form at his lake pavilion in S21: a rugged, long-haired amnesiac who could not recall his own name, living off mushrooms and accompanied by a wolf he described as calling him 'husband' [S21]. They talked him down and left him alive. The encounter resolved violently in S25, when he revealed himself as a spellcaster — casting Runic Body and Lightning Bolt before shifting into werewolf form — and was killed by the party exploiting his silver weakness, alongside his wolf companion, which he called his wife [S25]. His severed head and belt served as bounty proof, handed over in S26, where it was also confirmed his huge wolf companion had been his transformed wife [S26]. By S27 the party passed his cavern area to find his corpse had been eaten or removed, likely by the mushroom-folk or another creature [S27]. As of S33, a werewolf howl was heard by the party on the night road to Absalom under a full moon (DC 25 Perception). The GM explicitly tied it to the werewolf from the vault, suggesting Jaul Mezmin — or something connected to him — may now be loose on the island [S33].
