He first appears in the campaign record as a Rose Guard spellcaster whose signature icon was that spellbook [S28], and by the following session he is identified as the book's author — someone who returned to Absalom and maintained close ties with the Anathenian Archives, where the spellbook was subsequently held in restricted storage [S29]. Over the campaign, Zarmavdian's significance grows considerably. The Eldritch Researcher archetype's lore — centered on rare tomes, hidden secrets, and 'thresholds of truth' — is described as tied directly to him [S35], and his spellbook becomes a physical item the party carries; Abbas links its magic to the empty death and the Whispering Reeds curse when consulting a scholar [S36]. He is later established as the foremost researcher of the empty death phenomenon, having lived for hundreds of years after the Rose Guard era. He documented his dangerous findings and then physically censored them, hiding Nimbaloth-related secrets behind blank pages keyed to an unknown 'key' — and the party treats anyone who worked with him as a potential lead on a cure [S51]. As of [S54], his journal — recovered by the party — is confirmed to conceal writing on apparently blank pages through concealment magic. Otari is identified as his old party-mate and the first person to have had direct contact with him. The journal is described as 'the most precious thing to him,' and he never wasted a page. His notes continue to serve as a primary research thread for the party's investigation into the empty death and a possible cure.
