Cultists

monster defeated

Current state

Cultists are robed, priestly figures encountered repeatedly throughout Gauntlight's depths, each appearance marking a distinct iteration of dungeon-dwelling zealots. The first encounter came in [S16], where two cultists were found kneeling in silent prayer before a dormant gibbering mouther. They fought with tendrils of darkness (dealing bleed damage) and biting attacks, and could chant prayers or spells; both were slain by the party, their corpses bearing necklaces of flesh as grim devotional tokens. Later, in [S44], a group of four hooded, priestly figures appeared as a random encounter during a party rest, accompanied by a will-o-wisp. These cultists cast defensive spells, closed to melee, and sparked a theological debate among the party over whether Divine Sanctification would class them as holy or unholy. Abbas's critical Holy Light scattered the group, and the fight was still unresolved when the session ended. As of [S45], the cultists were identified more precisely as priests of Nimbaloth, the Empty Death. This gaggle of grey and dark-green hooded figures — moss on their shoulders, flails in hand — proved more organized than prior encounters: each cast Sanctuary on themselves at the outset, forcing a Will save before any attack could land, and they followed up with Searing Light and Divine Lance. Assessed as low-level (roughly level 2) casters, they were cut down in the opening combat. One survivor escaped by fleeing and leaping a railing, dropping forty feet into the dark below. Across all appearances the Cultists function as expendable zealots, their allegiance to Nimbaloth growing clearer with each encounter, as of [S45].
