Threshold of Truth (Zarmavdian's spellbook)

Current state

Threshold of Truth (Zarmavdian's spellbook) is the personal spellbook and Rose Guard artifact of the wizard Zarmavdian, and one of four relics the party identified as necessary to break the barrier sealing the Gauntlight [S28]. Its contents were deemed so dangerous that the book was consigned to the restricted collection of the Anathenaeum Archives in Absalom rather than kept in general circulation [S29]. The party traced the book to Kaixyan, a catfolk librarian who maintained it in the Anathenaeum's private restricted collection with a letter of introduction required for access [S33]. By S34 it was understood to be the fourth and final relic still outstanding — central to Abbas's archive errand — though there was momentary uncertainty about whether a separate dangerous tome Venris was already carrying might be the same object. Once acquired, the book took on a personal dimension for Venris. The party's cleric considered it spiritually hazardous and feared it could worsen Venris's affliction, but ultimately allowed Venris to read it using his page-skipping method [S38]. Reading confirmed the book's content connects in an unusual way to the Whispering Reeds and the phenomenon the party calls 'the empty death (but not really),' with Venris linking it directly to his own condition [S39]. As of S51, the spellbook's full contents are documented more precisely: it is Zarmavdian's research journal on the empty death, cross-referencing Tarnak's work (citing page 437). It contains mostly keyed spells and physically censored, scratched-out notes. Most significantly, its pages from approximately 503 onward are blank — not empty but concealed behind powerful magic tied to Nimbaloth. Abbas's Strange Script feat could detect only a trace of the empty death there; the actual content requires a 'key' the party has not yet located [S51].
