Rosa Argentis

item recovered

Current state

Rosa Argentis is the ancestral silver longsword/rapier of the Rajani family, worked with a rose-and-thorn motif and giving off a pinkish metallic hue in firelight [S11]. It has long-standing ties to the Rose Guard, an earlier protective order connected to Otari's history. The party first encountered it on display at the Donflower library in Otari, where it was described as able to "unlock his powers" in a Rajani's hands [S11]. Carman Rajani stole it; the party recovered it and it was returned to the library [S19, S25]. When the party learned it was one of the four Rose Guard relics needed to break the barrier into Gauntlight, Mayor Osef Menhemis gifted it to them [S29, S30]. Mechanically it is a +1 striking longsword (martial, versatile B/S, 1d8) that grants a +2 bonus when aiding an ally and the "Flurry of Flowers" ability; Cid was entrusted as its wielder [S30]. In combat it proved itself immediately, cutting "like butter" against mummies [S32]. Carried into Absalom, it drew notice at the city gate and Cid briefly considered selling it during a lean period [S33, S34]. Later the sword's silver construction proved pivotal against a chain spirit whose regeneration it bypassed once the silver trait was confirmed in the Foundry sheet, allowing Cid to behead her [S42]. Its full properties were rediscovered mid-campaign: silver imbued with peachwood (treats undead resistances as lower and acts like a weakness, effectively +2 vs undead) plus ghost-touch [S53]. As of S61, Rosa Argentis served as the party's MVP weapon, crit-killing the Barbazu through the heart, sizzling the forge-master and the Oscelus, and dealing bonus damage to both undead and fiends. S64 adds a new ability beat: Carman refuses to add a +2 weapon potency rune because Rosa Argentis is his family sword, demonstrates Blossom Veil, and is surprised when Cid can activate Blossom Veil too. The table also clarifies the sword has effectively been functioning for Cid as +1 striking.

Story

Rosa Argentis — Campaign Arc

Rosa Argentis enters the story as an heirloom curiosity: a rose-and-thorn-motif silver blade belonging to Carman Rajani's family, prominently displayed at the Donflower library in Otari, said to "unlock his powers" in a Rajani's hands [S11]. The party mulls helping Carman reclaim it but decides against enabling him. When the sword turns up as a confirmed permanent feature of the library — powerful, accessible, and already appraised as roughly +1 striking or better — it catches broader party interest [S18, S19]. Carman eventually steals it himself; the party recovers it and it is returned to the library and noted in Carman's trial [S19, S25].

The sword's significance shifts decisively when the party learns it is one of four Rose Guard relics required to break the magical barrier blocking access to Gauntlight [S28, S29]. Formerly identified as Vaunt Jeljust's weapon used to defend allies, it is now understood to be Otari's property — not the mayor's to give unilaterally — but Mayor Osef Menhemis secures and gifts it to the party within a couple of days [S20, S29, S30]. On delivery, its full sheet is read aloud: a silver, longsword-sized rapier with a rose-shaped pommel, mechanically a +1 striking 1d8 longsword (martial, versatile B/S), conferring a +2 bonus to aid an ally and the "Flurry of Flowers" ability. Cid takes custody as entrusted wielder [S30].

In the field it performs immediately. Against the mummies and McLani it cuts "like butter" and leaves a burn singe from its magical properties [S32]. Carried into Absalom it draws notice at the city gate — the Rajani family connection follows the sword, with the family wanting it back because of their kinship to its origin [S33]. During a difficult stretch where coin is short, Cid is tempted to sell it, though he does not [S34].

A mid-campaign crisis reveals a critical bookkeeping gap: the sword's silver (precious material) trait had gone missing from its Foundry character sheet. When the party encounters a chain spirit with regeneration, a mid-fight audit confirms the silver property, re-enables it, and Cid uses it to behead her — the material trait making the difference between a stalled fight and a clean kill [S42]. Even after that fix, the weapon's full depth remains underexplored: in a shadow fight its silver properties are active but the sword is bent in anger when Cid lands a killing blow [S44].

The real rediscovery comes during deeper dungeon work [S53]: the party catalogues the blade as silver imbued with peachwood — the pinkish metallic hue has always been the tell — which means it treats undead resistances as lower and functions like a weakness source, plus the ghost-touch rune, making it effectively +2 against undead overall. Cid uses it to pin Jafakai and finish the mummy spellcaster the same session. The sword delivers a 38-damage reactive-strike critical hit with sword critical specialization (humiliating the target so it can only attack) [S55], cementing its reputation as the party's premier anti-undead tool.

The peachwood-and-silver combination proves equally punishing against infernal enemies. The sword crit-decapitates Barbazus and is confirmed effective vs devils as well as undead [S60]. As of S61, Rosa Argentis is described as the party's MVP weapon for the session: it crit-kills the Barbazu through the heart, sizzles the forge-master and the Oscelus, and deals bonus damage to undead and fiends alike. The Rose Guard relic that once sat decoratively in a small-town library has become one of the campaign's defining weapons — its Rajani bloodline association, its precious-material construction, and its anti-evil properties all converging in the deepest and most dangerous fights the party has faced.

S64 clarifies that the sword still has family-locked mystery beyond its visible combat stats. Carman refuses to let the party put a +2 weapon potency rune onto Rosa Argentis because it is her family sword, then demonstrates Blossom Veil and is surprised when Cid can activate it too [S64, 02:53:58; S64, 02:54:37; S64, 02:56:37; S64, 02:57:15]. The table also clarifies that the sword has effectively been functioning for Cid as +1 striking [S64, 02:55:38]. This makes Rosa Argentis not only the party's anti-undead/anti-fiend blade, but also an unresolved Rajani-bloodline relic whose deeper permissions are now showing through Cid.
