Tarnak

Current state

Tarnak is a deceased ancestor of the Manhem family who lived roughly 500 years before the current campaign, serving as a member of the original Rose Guard [S51]. He was the secret son of A Sephna and Otari, and the distant father of Maklani (the re-founder of the Manhem line) [S30]. His identity was confirmed by the party from a family painting showing a strong resemblance to Otari's ghost [S39]. Tarnak kept a detailed journal and contributed material to Zarmavdian's Thresholds of Truth (page 437) [S51]. He knew about Asefna's condition — a curse associated with the Empty Death — and built something that reportedly helped with it; his feared 'troubles' were ultimately proven wrong and never came to pass [S39]. His notes describe a distinctive mark of the Empty Death: a ring of seven shallow pits in the mud where no plants grow, and the eerie sensation that a hand placed in one would return as if it had never existed [S40]. Obsessed with what he believed was a hereditary curse that had killed his Rose Guard parents, Tarnak devoted himself to understanding and countering it. He developed and proved a method or ritual to prevent a cursed body from turning to dust — without ever needing to use it on himself — and this practice became a Manhem family tradition, eventually codified as the Unguent of Timelessness. His preserved body lies in the crypt's lower level [S30]. As of [S50], his journal is one of Abbas's primary research documents; the GM ruled it safe for Venris to read without a Will save, and the text underpins current party theories about countering the Empty Death's theft of time and space [S51].
