Crawling Hands are undead severed hands that move and attack under their own power, appearing in multiple forms across the campaign. The first encounter came at the Nimbaloth altar [S21], where four powered-up variants rose to fight the party — a recolored, stronger breed immune to death, disease, paralysis, poison, the unconscious condition, visual conditions, and bleed. Their signature attack was seizing victims by the throat, imposing a grabbed condition that costs an extra action to speak or cast spells. Crawling Hands reappeared much later in Yazongleer's lair [S54], now serving as the aberrant warden's personal minions. Two distinctive specimens accompanied him: one a massive gnarled claw, the other a slimmer dark hand the party recognized as belonging to a mute, brain-damaged prisoner they had encountered earlier. Unlike the altar variants, these could be frightened and sent fleeing. During the cliffhanger combat, Venris critically struck one for 30 damage. A third and larger group surfaced in the aftermath of the fight with Doriana [S55]. These hands were her creations — voodoo-like manifestations tied to the dimension of dreams, their appearance gradually shifting to resemble their victims over time. Over a dozen withered specimens had been nailed to a wall as trophies, including the hand of a skull-creature the party had previously rescued. When Doriana died, several fled and later attempted to ambush the party in a corridor. These variants were physically weak but burst with pus on death. As of [S55], Crawling Hands have functioned variously as altar guardians, a villain's personal attendants, and a dreamwalker's trophied experiments — each iteration distinct in origin and behavior.
