Zarmavdian's journal

Current state

Zarmavdian's journal is a research document — and the term has come to describe a cluster of significant written records the party has encountered across the campaign, each yielding critical lore or practical intelligence. The first journal entered play in [S38]: a handwritten volume combining a ghost-encounter record with Zarmavdian's own research notes, handed to the party by Menhames to help investigate the dust-turning affliction. Written partly in Necril and partly in Aklo, it was read by Venris in the hope of learning what Zarmavdian had attempted against the curse. In [S39], the party gained access to a second major written record: a roughly 300–400-page autobiographical journal penned by the ancestor Tarnak, discovered in Manhem's manor library. Manhem permitted the party to borrow it for a few days. It was flagged as a key cure-lead, the party hoping it would illuminate Tarnak's knowledge of Sefna's condition and what he constructed to address it. A third journal surfaced in [S44]: an old, fragile leather volume belonging to Cora Fallow Glade, functioning as an assassin's poison codex. It contained formulas for hunting spider venom, giant scorpion venom, giant wasp venom, and malyas root paste, alongside personal notes identifying Cora as Belcorra's chief assassin. Venris read it via the Strange Script feat and transcribed the recipes into his crafting notes before the book crumbled to dust upon being closed. As of [S54], Zarmavdian's recovered research journal has resurfaced in a more mysterious form: its apparently blank pages conceal hidden writing protected by a blocking spell the party cannot yet decipher — described as similar to 'the MT device.' It has been left with Otari, who is attempting to recall the concealment method.
