Barbazu (bearded devil) are a class of Hellish soldier encountered repeatedly in the deeper reaches of Gauntlight. They are fire-immune warriors armed with reach glaives that carry the Forceful trait, building momentum with each consecutive strike, and their attacks inflict an Infernal Wound — a persistent bleed that resists normal removal [S59]. They can also throw their glaives and deliver a beard bite that transmits Avernal Fever, leaving victims enfeebled with a long onset [S59][S60]. The party first became aware of a Barbazu during a foray into the Gauntlight depths, where one was observed commanding and drilling a grothlet brigade; the party judged direct engagement unwise and withdrew without a fight [S54]. On a later approach they heard the same or a similar bearded devil through a closed door and one-way mirror, issuing orders to lesser creatures in an adjacent room — again serving as a reason to detour rather than confront [S56]. Direct combat began in earnest when bearded devils were found guarding an upstairs torture chamber. They fought in waves alongside a Zebub and a summoned monkey troop, pressing the party hard with reach-glaive charges before being ground down [S60]. As of [S61], a solitary Barbazu stood guard at the Hellforge, wielding a black, red-glowing glaive of impenetrable craft — a mundane steel arrow simply bounced off its heavily muscled body. Veve's Invoke True Name ritual identified it as "Barcombuck," stripping away its supernatural resilience; Cid then killed it in a single devastating Rosa Argentis strike, ending the encounter almost immediately [S61].
